Alan Leap & Son winner of 1st open St Malo 29th June 2014 when 276 members sent 667 birds, liberation at 7.30am. The winning pigeon Red hen IHU 12s 37807 was clocked on the 2nd morning at 6.26am to record a velocity of 658.112 in a very tough race where no day birds were clocked and only a total of 20 birds recorded over the 3 days racing periods. Alan races in Tallaght & District for the last 37 years. He is a founder member and is respected within his club, so much so that the winning red hen was bred by a friend and club member Philip Plummer. The winning pigeon was given to Alan in 2102 in a kit of young birds by Philip out of which two Open winners have been recorded so far. The winning loft is that of a ‘L’ shape measuring 16ft x 16ft where 30 old birds are raced roundabout and a max of 40 young birds on the natural system. Old birds are trained 35 miles daily and are re-paired before Channel racing and allowed to sit eggs. All of Alan's yearlings must race from Penzance before going to France as 2 year olds. Young birds are raced lightly with a max of 3 land races. While visiting with Alan I noticed race Dipomlas hanging in the loft of different pigeons from French race points. When I inquired about these Alan informed me that over the years he has won the following - 97 1st o/b derby Dinard, 2013 Gold medal winner for the same pigeon flying France 3 times and within the top 100 of the open result each time clocked, 2013 1st south section 44th open Saint Allouestre INFC, 2014 1st open St Malo ISRF. This St Malo race is also sponsored By PigeonLink.com with a prize of an extra 500 euro. While chatting with Alan I asked was there anybody that inspired him or advised him in the sport? Alan scratched his head and smiled before saying that " back in 1981 at a marking of a race Joe Doheny advised me that if you wish to race the channel you cannot be lazy." When I asked Alan for his advice he promptly replied "observation, motivation, training and patience". The partnership would like to thank the following people for their help over the years Philip Plummer , Mick Warner , Keith Somers and Alans good wife Rita. Yours in sport Alan Rice |
