30 YEARS OF WINNING

Bill OMara DNE

On the 9th May 2014 the Irish South Road Fed liberated 3505 birds in Pilmore Beach. The name O'Mara is never far away when it comes to winning within the ISRF. It is usually the son Gerry who has that honour. However on this occasion it gives me great pleasure to say its the father Mr Bill O'Mara who not only takes top spot but also wins 2nd Federation, and this was with only 5 birds entered, so a great performance all round.

Bill has raced pigeons since 1983. His first club was the Dublin North East. Over the years he has been a member of a few local clubs, but came back to the DNE about 5 years ago and he has won more than his fare share of wins over the years. Bill's birds are raced on the roundabout system and fed the best mixture he can get. Bill never keeps more than 30 to 40 old birds and around 50 young birds which are darkened. One thing that can be said about Bill is that even with a small team he never misses a race, right out to France 400 miles.

Bill openly admits that even after 30 years in pigeons he is still learning. A great bit of advice he gave was to get a note book and write down everything you do daily and don’t be afraid to try new things. But most important of all is never stop trying to do better and never give up.

Over the years the birds Bill has raced have been cultivated into what can now be called an O'Mara family of pigeons, made up of winners paired to winners which Bill feels is the best way to be successful.

Bill at his loft

I asked Bill who he admired most in the sport and he was quick to say his son Gerry who is just about the best flyer we have seen for many years here in Dublin. At 75 years old Bill is never one to sit back he always set out to win, and I remember him saying to me after we had done the result one Saturday, " ... Well Billy I’m off to get ready to win next weeks race!"

This is a great attitude for a fancier to have of any age.

Bill is a real all round sport fan he loves going to see the Dubs play in Croke Park and I enjoy our chat about Leinster Rugby when we are in the club. Although this is not the first time Bill has topped the ISRF when I informed him he had won the club you could see the joy he felt he was so pleased and I have to say I was over the moon for him so I can only imagine how he felt when it was confirmed that he was 1st and 2nd ISRF.

Bill wanted to thank all of his friends and family and everyone who helped him over the years with a special mention to Tom Boland of Halifax in the UK.

So on behalf of myself and all the members of the club WELL DONE Bill on a great win and enjoy your moment in the sun it’s well deserved

Yours in Sport Billy Harris
