Rose of Sharon

The first ever combine result to be released in 2010 included all of the Irish Combines & Federations racing from the race-point in France, generally held on the first Friday in  June. The EDC, NIPA ,UF, EC, ISRF and IHUNFC were at St Malo on June 28th 2013 - all Irish organisations. The weather was  unsuitable for a liberation and the birds were held over until Sunday when the decision was made to move the birds back into England to Portland with the hope  of a race on Monday the 1st of July.

The birds got away on Monday morning into a westerly wind. The top combine velocity of the day went to the Dundonald partnership of Stephen Brown & Sons, with a velocity of 1190.736.  They timed their two year blue hen “Rose of Sharon” at 4.42pm to win the Combine from Portland. This bird also won  the East Down Combine and the “Millar Gold Cup” for the best bird in the IHU from this event.

The combine race was to prove a difficult race with just 338 birds home in the three days. “Rose of Sharon” was one of few young birds that Stephen bought in 2011 from Mamwell Bros of Louth in Lincolnshire who race in the NRCC. She is a small pigeon and as a yearling she flew Penzance for Stephen and is described by Stephen as a " steady racer".

She was selected at the start of the 2013 season for the Old Bird St. Mallow race in 2014 and went to the race on a semi-widowhood roundabout system as she was sharing a cock with another hen. Congratulations to the Browns on another outstanding performance and winning the combine trophy sponsored by Pigeonlink.com. The trophy and framed certificate will be presented to Stephen over the coming week.
