Christy Houghton  Christy Haughton was the ISRF open Winner from Portland OB on July 1st 2013. Christy races in the Dublin South West club which has a membership of 20. The club is over 50 years in existence and Christy and his late brother Arthur have raced for many years. Christy is the treasurer of the club and is not afraid doing his bit for the club and the sport in general. The DSW club sends an average 200 to 300 birds per week and the membersship is always around 20.

The ISRF sent 829 birds to France this year for a Friday liberation. Due to poor weather conditions it was decided to liberate in Portland England on the Monday as the birds were 5 days in the basket at that stage.

Christy Haughton fly's 253 mile, 255 yards from Portland. With a three year old cock he has topped the ISRF against 307 members. This three year old cock had won its club from Penzance as a 2 year old last year and was kept for France this year. It was given five or six inland races and then just trained with Sean as far as Arklow - 50 miles - two or three times a week, weather permitting.

Christy races on a pure widow system on the land races and trains the hens and races the hen to the cocks widowhood hens as the season goes on. He would send both hen and cock to some of the channel races and would have a few old hens at hand for the cock if he returned before the hen. Christy was second fed before and this is his first time to win the open (the Blue Ribbon race of the ISRF and the longest race of 2013). Christy has clocked out of France before and tries to send to France every year.

He feels France is the main race for him and he looks forward to it every year. Christy keeps 50 YB and would winter 40 OB. Very little stock birds are kept and he breeds off the racing team for the yb . This three year old was bred by himself off a hen he bought at the yearly charity show in Dublin from Cousins Bros, a Wilamish strain crossed with a Ron Williamson cock. He treats his bird at the start of the season for the main 3 and then leaves it at that for the rest of the season.

Christy wishes to tank Pat Maples and Tommy Kane the two ISRF conveyers who looked after the birds in France for the five days as his bird returned home to him in great condition . Christy also wishes his club mates and ISRF all the best in the future.
