A report of the Irish National Flying Club Vannes King's Cup race The Irish National Flying Club Vannes King's Cup was flown from Plaudren in 2012 and was sponsored by Samuel McCausland Ltd. Seven hundred and ninety four members entered 2,783 pigeons in the King's Cup race, competing for £37,607.00 sterling. The pigeons were released in blue sky and sunshine at 6.30 am with no wind at the release site and on route it was predicted to be westerly turning north westerly. The race turned out to be one of the hardest in the past few years with only 10 birds timed on the day of release. Champion Riverview Red; a wonderful 48 hours for the O’Reilly Family – Malahide To say a dream has come true would be an understatement for the O’Reilly Family. Gerry and his two sons, Niall and Derek have always set their stall out for the distance events and this year's performances in the two premier distance races in Ireland can only prove one thing; that they are Ireland's number one distance superstars in 2012. This report is based on the INFC Blue Riband event, the Kings Cup and this year's winners are : G O’Reilly & Sons – Malahide The racing partnership is made up of father Gerry, ably assisted by his sons Niall and Derek, although both sons were very clear to point out that father Gerry's enthusiasm for the distance racing and work around the lofts doing his usual bits and bobs is the major influence on the loft's top channel performances. Now to the winner – this is a beautiful three year old red cock, now named Champion Riverview Red by the winning partnership. This cock has always been a steady channel performer and has previously won 5th club Penzance in 2010, 3rd club, 4th federation, 14th Open INFC Friendship National St Malo in 2011 and now he is a King's Cup winner. Now for the breeding – many years ago a friendship was struck up with one of Ireland's top distance fanciers, Mr Jimmy Anderson from Cullybackey. A former national winner, Jimmy had a tremendous record in all of the major national races and supplied the O’Reillys with nothing but his best winning lines resulting in numerous top winning national positions with the pinnacle this season being this Kings Cup Winner. Jimmy's family of birds were based on the old Frank Cheetham family of distance birds. On speaking to Gerry he had nothing but praise for Jimmy and his family and was quick to point out that he would like to personally thank him for all of his assistance over the years with the bloodlines obtained. As stated earlier, this was a dream 48 hrs, for the partnership went on to clock a second bird on the day and are the likely winners of the coveted Harkness Rose Bowl, an award previously won in 2009. Their 2nd bird timed wins 8th open. This is another super distance performer- a five year old whose previous performances are as follows : 3rd club 50th ECF Talbenny in 2009. It also flew Vannes , clocked on the day at 6.30pm and just outside the prizes in 2009. 11th club Vannes , clocked next day again, just outside the prizes in 2010. 12th club, 18th ECF 182nd National Vannes in 2011 and 2nd club, 2nd ECF, 8th National Vannes in 2012. It wins a merit award this year You will agree that this is a super channel performer, racing four times from France and it is only a five year old. Going by her performances there is no doubt she is bred for the job in hand. Her breeding is the absolute cream of the Brian Denny family. Again a top relationship was built up with the maestro Brian Denny and the O’Reilly family obtained nothing but the best of the world famous Tuff Nut family of birds and as can be seen by recent performances their results are outstanding . On finishing I would like to personally congratulate the O’Reilly family – Gerry , Niall and Derek on winning this seasons Blue Riband Event. |
